Students United for Peace and Justice at UofL…
WHY PROTEST TUITION?
TUITION HAS BEEN RAISED ENOUGH ALREADY.
From 2002 to 2007, the amount of money UofL has received in tuition and fees has increased by 71%.
THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS IS UNFAIR.
Students provide 40% of the university’s revenue, but receive only 5% representation when the decision to raise tuition is made.
POST-GRADUATION DEBT WILL AFFECT ALL OF US.
Total student debt in the U.S. is more than $471 billion—not
including private loans. The average student graduates with twice the amount of debt as 10 years ago.
BUT ISN’T THE ISSUE THE STATE GOVERNMENT?
Yes, our university is underfunded by the state. We should pressure our legislators to support KY House Bill 11, which would freeze tuition for the next two years and limit future increases to the rate of inflation.
HOWEVER, UofL’s Board of Trustees has ultimate power over the cost of tuition. The Board should be doing everything in its power to avoid tuition increases. Instead, it has repeatedly transferred the burden to students. This has to stop, but it won’t unless we do something about it.
